Elementary school students point to the bottom of a test tube where the DNA appears of a banana.

The visit focused on hands-on learning. High school students led investigations showing how to isolate DNA from a banana. They first mixed a mashed banana with soap, salt, and a water solution to break down cells. They then filtered out the solids, and added cold alcohol. The result was visible DNA that clumped into a white, stringy substance at the bottom of the test tube.

The high school students also explained DNA and traits through a Puppy DNA activity. The experience was designed to spark curiosity and inspire interest in science at an early age.
