Snowflakes, Math, and a “Symme-Tree”

The lesson began with a read-aloud of "Snow" by Cynthia Rylant, a picture book that celebrates snow and the cozy joys of winter, featuring a young girl, her friend, and her grandmother. From quiet overnight flakes to big, cheerful snow that hints at a day off from school, the story set the scene.

Students then folded paper, made careful cuts, and unfolded their own one-of-a-kind symmetrical snowflakes. Each finished snowflake found a home on the class “symme-tree” just outside their classroom. Oh "symme-tree", Oh "symme-tree", how lovely are your snowflakes!
